ARTStor: Larger image downloads

ARTStor now allows for downloads that are 1024 pixels on the long side for most images in their collection. Users will be permitted to download these large JPEG images for use in classroom presentation and for other noncommercial, educational uses in the software environment of their choice. Users can also continue to download images at up to 3200 pixels for offline presentations by using the ARTstor Offline Image Viewer (OIV).

Grove Encyclopedia of Classical Art and Architecture
Grove Encyclopedia of Decorative Arts
Oxford Companion to the Photograph

You can access these titles through the E-Books section of the library webpage, or through the “Online Texts” tab within Research By Subject: Art or Research By Subject: Architecture

Finals Week Extended Hours

Safari E-books for computer applications

Miami University Libraries subscribes to Safari E-books, a collection of online textbooks and reference books related to technology and computer applications.

Safari E-books includes a number of titles from publishes like O’Reilly, Adobe, Macromedia, Peachpit Press, etc. on software programs such as:

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
Dreamweaver and Flash
Maya
AutoCAD
iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, After Effects

ARTstor has released a number of collection updates, including:

New Collection: Images from the Mark Rothko Family Collection
Ghiberti collection (completed)
2,300 additional images to the Islamic Art and Architecture collection
Additional images of major Italian and other European works from Scala Archives
Collaboration with the New Museum of Contemporary Art to digitize and distribute approximately 7,000 images from the New Museum’s photo archive
Agreement for the digitization of 70,000 images from the Ezra Stoller archive

The Miami Libraries is pleased to offer Scholarly Commons, a new institutional repository service for Miami University. After several years of service at the Art/Architecture library, Angie Webster is leaving Miami to pursue opportunities in San Francisco. At the same time, the library is welcoming Kimberly Fox, who comes to us from IUPUI and holds a Master’s in Library Science.

Kimberly will be taking on all of Angie’s former responsibilities, including issues with circulation and reserves.

ARTStor: larger images soon!

ARTStor has recently announced that at the end of 2007, about 80% of its images will be available in larger sizes for downloads. The larger images will be approximately 1024 pixels on the long side.

Images from ARTStor can also be downloaded onto their Offline Image Viewer (OIV) at a resolution of up to 3200 pixels on the long side, with zoomable slides. New versions of the Offline Image Viewer allow for downloads of entire image groups, addition of text, and various types of slide layouts, much like PowerPoint.

New Catalog Interface (beta)

The Libraries are pleased to announce an experimental interface for the Miami Libraries catalog that takes advantage of faceted searching.

The new interface allows users to conduct a broad search (e.g. “avant-garde”) and then limit results by fields such as format (e.g. “print”), language (“English”), genre (“Exhibitions”), geography (“Europe”), etc.

Faceted searching is also available for the video collection at Miami Libraries, allowing users to search for videos by language, genre, geographic coverage, etc.
